    SELF DEFENCE TECHNIQUES - WHITE BELTS                                                                                         

    1.    WRIST RELEASES - "TENKAN" movements

    UKE:  Right natural stance and grip left wrist held downward with right hand.

    DEF: Open left hand extension as left shoulder forward to put weight down unbendable arm as step left foot forward until wrist is under knot in belt and fingers point to own right foot, right foot tenkan as rotate wrist inward and extend hands away.

    1. RAISED WRIST HELD DEFENCE - "KOTE MAWASHI"

    UKE:  Grip left wrist held upward with right hand as right foot steps forward.

    DEF: Step forward with left foot as left elbow reaches forward over Uke's right forearm, rotate left hand upward to stroke own right cheek with fingers to press left elbow downward toward Uke's centre as body faces straight forward to walking stance.

    1. WRIST RELEASES – “IRIMI” movements

    UKE: Grip right wrist held downward with right hand in right natural stance.

    DEF: Right arm extension to right as rotate palm upward as left foot steps behind Uke, then encircle neck with left arm and pull chin back (thumb up) as withdraw left foot to drop Uke to floor. Can trap Uke’s arm against body. Note; same movements for wrist held upward, rotate right hand inward to press thumb against body. Note: can also do left inward palm block to back of elbow.  

    1. FRONT NECK CHOKE RELEASE No. ONE - "KUBI SHIMAE"

    UKE: Grip neck with both hands as right foot steps forward.

    DEF: Grip back of right wrist with right hand and pull against own neck as press chin onto Uke's right hand, right foot back to sparring stance as left sword arm swing over Uke's right wrist. [Left fingertip to throat as right foot back and body turns sideways.]

    1. (a)   HAMMER LOCK RELEASE

    UKE:  Grip right wrist with both hands from behind and lift toward back of Defs neck.

    DEF: Step left foot backwards through (do not bend forward) as spin away from held hand with left elbow up to jaw; (then left elbow smash or fingertip stab to throat or eye).

    1. (b)       HAMMER LOCK WITH ELBOW GRIP ATTACK

    UKE:  From behind grip uniform at right elbow and raise right wrist with left hand.

    DEF: Right arm extension backwards and left arm extension forward as step left foot around clockwise behind Uke to encircle Uke's throat with left forearm, right arm bar press against body, pull Uke's chin to left (thumb up) as withdraw left foot. Can grip uniform collar to pull Uke down backwards.

    1. HEAD LOCK RELEASE

    UKE:  Encircle head with left arm as grip own left wrist with right hand.

    DEF: Turn chin to Uke's chest as right foot back behind Uke's left foot, reach right hand up Uke's back as left hand extends inside Uke's hands, right forearm extension push (cut) against neck under side of jaw. (If Uke resists, first pull chin, then push.) Note - Can also pull back of hair or collar downward if Uke is very tall.

    ALTERNATIVE  DIVERSIONARY ATTACKS:

    pinch inside of thigh from behind; or strike groin from in front; or bite flank. Note: do not rely on inflicting pain as assailant may not be able to feel pain.
